Update on Andrew

It's been been a few months since I wrote about the big man. Last we checked in he weighed 389 lbs for a loss of 111 lbs around the middle of March. His last weigh in was July 14th and his weight was 342lbs. A total loss of 158lbs .
To be totally honest I never thought that Andrew would have made past a few workouts when he walked into my gym the first time. Nobody quite understands and I didnt before training him how hard it is for a big person to actually lose the weight. There are a lot of ignorant people out there that think its a matter of getting off their asses, hitting the gym and putting the cheeseburgers down then they will magically lose 300 lbs. Try strapping 300lbs over your shoulders and walk to the end of your driveway. Big people like Andrew have a hard time standing for more then a few minutes and you could see why if you think about carrying that weight. Now try going to a traditional gym like the rec center. The machines are not designed for guys his size. The bike, the rowing machine, treadmill, stair climber......name it and try putting a person of that size on it.  So for a big person hitting the local gym is not very useful.
I have never trained a 500lb man before I started with Andrew so it was as much of a learning curve to me as it was to him. This was a challenge really for both of us. I am a pretty old school guy and if I make a promise I will keep it. I promised Andrew if he showed up to the club I would train him. He made me a promise and that was he wouldnt miss any workouts. The guy has only missed 1 session since we started may 2013 and it was a solid reason. When his mother died in April he worked out twice as hard that month.
His mother was another person I made a promise to as well. She called me a couple months before she passed and asked me to see this through knowing she didnt have much time left. That phone call was one of the toughest  calls I ever had to take. I balled my eyes out knowing how tough it was going to be on Andrew. The nicest guy in the world that cant catch a break. Of course I am going to see this through. That guy is going to be smaller then me when Im done with him and by the way things are going that wont be too long from now. The amount of weight he has lost already is mind blowing
I always look forward to weigh in day which is every 3 weeks. Seeing that number drop and thinking of the things that weigh the same. Our first weigh in he only lost a few pound so I imagined a few sticks of butter. Then it was 50lbs..... the weight of my lazy bulldog. Then it was 75lbs.......I thought about a huge sack of potatoes. Then 1oolbs ..... 125......135 the size of my girlfriend......now 158lbs .......Frankie Edgar ( ufc fighter). Its blown away to think he will be in the 2 hundreds by Christmas.
Andrew is pumped about all this. He has conquered so many goals to this point. Camping, fishing, dating, riding a bike, dropping weight, swimming and running just to name a few. He sets realistic goals that are achievable. Then he does them. Simple as that. Baby steps to success. This is one of the main reasons he is there every week. A sense of accomplishment is important when you have to go a long way.
We owe most of his success from changing his diet but also the types of workouts I have been doing with him. Like i said earlier, gym equipment is not built for guys his size. I mostly work with kettlebells and do TRX workouts with him. TRX is my substitute for all those machines and equipment at big gyms. Modifying traditional exercises, stretching and focusing mostly on his core and agility has been really working for him. He is moving fast and for longer then ever before.
This weekend July 20th he will be competing once again in the annual charity wrestling event that happens at the band hall. Last year we worked hard so that he would be able to get in the ring so he could compete. This year he is going to be strong enough to be able to use more moves and compete at a higher level. (Tickets to this charitable event are still available).
The doctors are more then happy with his progress. They have been monitoring Andrew's health step by step. So far they have taken him off all his meds because of what he has been doing and for dropping so much weight he doesnt need them anymore. Basically he was saving his own life when  he started doing this.
Its getting late and I got to beat on the big man tomorrow so Im going to shut down. But before I do I just want to say one thing. If a man that was this far gone can make a come back and change his life around. ANYONE CAN !!!
If you're not living you're dying

The Lion Killer

Chris "Bukwas" Anderson " the Lion Killer"

Picture
July 12th  Chris Anderson stepped into the Battlefield Fight League's cage
for his second time in just over 2 month. This time it was at the Hard Rock
Casino in Port Coquitlam and the winner of this match goes on to fight for the
BFL Amateur Title in the Fall. Andersons last opponent  was Mike Crisp, a
grappler that trained out of Lions MMA in Vancouver. Chris dominated that
opponent so I imagine they wanted revenge. They matched up their
top striker (former BC heavyweight kickboxing champ and top ranked mma fighter)
Kiarash Moghaddam for this important fight.
We had plenty of time to get ready for Kiarash so we brought in some of
the best fighters the Valley has to offer for Andersons training camp. Names
like Mike Hackert, Nathan Swayze, Todd Stewart, Russ McCumber, Travis Peterson,
Pat Kitto and Chris " Quicksand Anderson' just to name a few of the dozens. I was
proud to see the alumni of past and present members come together and put their
bodies on the line to get Chris ready for this battle. Everyone was united for
this one as they often do when an important fight comes up for an athlete in the
Valley
Anderson put on an extra 5 pounds of muscle mass in our Kettlebell class
and that seemed to be a huge part of the outcome of this fight. Proper nutrition,
power and strength along with the endless days of sparring put Chris at the peak
of his his career going into this battle.
Before we went into this fight we knew that Kiarash would be fighting at
his lightest weight at 170lbs. Weight cutting is a science and in order to drop
weight divisions you have to make sacrifices  in order to do so. We figured that
he would either have to diet down with carb depletion,  cut huge amounts of
water weight or lose muscle mass to make 170lbs. Either way he was coming in
weak and we would take advantage of that with Andersons endless amounts of
cardio and pressure. At weigh ins we could tell he didnt make weight as
easily as Anderson did. Most of which was done on the ferry in a sauna
suit.
Entering the cage Kiarash tried to intimidate Anderson with a huge mean
mug stare. This did nothing but fuel Bukwas's fire. When the fight started Chris
took the center of the cage and dictated where the fight was going. Anderson
shot for a take down right away and was successful getting him to the ground.
They were inticapating this as we heard in an interview earlier in the day. They
thought that Anderson was a ground fighter so we played right into it. Moghaddam
was able to get up to his feet without suffering any blows but he had taken him
off his game. Anderson pursued him across the cage and started finding
his range with combos and a few leg kicks. He was confident enough to land a
spinning back kick which pleased the crowd. Moghaddam wasnt able to put
anything togther always on his heals as Anderson followed him around the cage
keeping up the pressure. Anderson threw 2 overhand rights. One clipping
Moghaddam and the other just missing by a few inches. Anderson attempted a soft
kick  which his opponent caught but he wasnt able to capitolize on which proved to
be the only time he was able to touch Anderson in the fight. In the next few
seconds Anderson fakes the overhand right and goes for the straight cross to the
body. Moghaddam knees buckle and Anderson delivers another fatal blow to the
same spot.  Two more bunches land before the ref Tony Williamson jumps in to stop
the fight 1:10 into the very first round. The crowd goes wild and Anderson leaps
to the top of the cage to thank his fans.
Later that night the BFL welterweight champion Curtis Harriot 6-1 won his
championship fight and vacated his title to pursue his pro career. Harriot's only
loss was to Anderson so we were a little disappointed we didnt get to try to
take it away from him later in the year. Maybe he didnt want that fight and
wanted to go out on top?
All we know now is that we are waiting to see who who will agree to fight
Anderson for the belt as he just dominated the 2 toughest guys in the division.
Guess we are goinng to have to wait and see.
We would like to thank everyone that supported Chris and the Bulldog Fight
Team for this event and its sponsors. Chris does not get paid to fight so what
he does is not for the cash but for the love of the sport. Without sponsorship a
young athlete would not be able to follow his dream and represent the Comox
Valley in a sport where we have to cross obsticales every week just to compete.
Many thanks to Skidlords clothing company, Plateau plumbing, Comox Chiropractic,
Siefferts farm and the fine people Island Bison for all chipping in to clothe
and feed him. I would also like to thank all the people that took time off their
busy schedules to help train Chris for his fight.
If you are interested in sponsoring Chris in his upcoming title fight
please message Jonny Mac for packages. If you would like to see more of chris
you can follow him on Facbook under Chris Bukwas Anderson or go to the Comox Valley Boxing Club page

Kettlebell Classes

Just over a couple months ago I received a message from my friend Darcy that lived in Victoria. Darcy told me that he was moving to Courtenay and wanted to set up his Kettlebells at my club. It didnt take me more then a few seconds to reply and say I would be more then happy to set him up with a time slot and a few people to teach.
Looking back now that was one of the best decisions I made since I became the owner of the club.
Darcy is Dragondoor certified as an instructor which is by no means an easy achievement. There is only 2 on the island and now we have one. Darcy has also designed a workout that compliments the kickboxing and mma movements and we are seeing  faster ,stronger and quicker athletes then ever before.
You dont have to be interested in combat sports to benefit from a kettlebell workout. People of all shape and sizes will see fast results and can even prevent back pain and stubburn injuries.
A little history on kettlebells and why they are affective: Kettlebells were developed in Russia in the 1700s, primarily for weighing crops. It is said that these farmers became stronger and found them useful for showing off their strength during festivals. The Soviet army used them as part of their physical training and conditioning programs in the 20th century. They had been used for competition and sports throughout Russia and Europe since the 1940s. Though kettlebells had been in the United States in some form since the 1960s or earlier, Dragon Door Publications and Pavel Tsatsouline developed the first instructor
certification program in the USA in 2001.
Some of the benefits include:
Helps achieve that King Leonidas body           You’ll have an easier time performing daily
activities
You’ll fire up more muscles
You’ll lose more weight in less time
You’ll realize you’re stronger than you thought
Your posture will improve
You’ll boost your rear in one move ( that means a nice booty)
This is just to name a few.
Since starting this class I have heard nothing but good things. I even enjoy taking the class myself. I have been working out for over 20 years and have never had faster gains in strength since joining in on this class.
I see people smiling and laughing because of the games that are being played. Kids in the bag room while their parents are pushing themselves. The atmoshphere is pretty light but that doesnt mean that it isnt an intense workout. Everyone is pouring with sweat by the end and satisfied that they achived more in an hour then you would in twice that time doing a conventional workout.
If you are interested in taking this class please send me a message here on our website or drop by any Tuesday or Thursday night at 7pm to give it a try. ** Remember, first class is FREE

Chis Bukwas Anderson

Chris Anderson's nickname "Bukwas' comes from his roots and suits him very well.  Chris is of native descent and his ancestors believe in a supernatural spirit " man of the woods". Legend tells that Bukwas was mysterious and illusive, he lurks nears the edge of the dark forest in which he lives, offering food to lost humans, luring them to become spirits in his shadowy underworld.
The same can be said about himself as a fighter. The cage is his woods and inside he is very dark and mysterious. He llures you in with some openings making you feel safe but draws you in where he wants you. Most find themselves in very bad positions where they cannot escape .
Chris has a big fight ahead of him coming up July 12th at the Hard Rock Casino in Port Coquitlam. This will be his 3rd appearence in the Battlefield Fight Leagues cage. His last fight was very impressive controlling his opponent and finishing the fight in the second round with a clinic of ground and pound to earn him a TKO. This win should have given Chris a shot at the title owned by Curtis Harriot 6-1 ( His only loss was to Chris) but we are patient and will gladly beat up the rest of the division until that date is set.
We are not looking past this fight as his opponent Kiarash Moghadam is no joke. He is 4-2 and used to be a Canadian heavyweight kickboxing champion. We have studied Mr. Moghadam and found some holes in his game. This will be the lightest he has ever fought at which might be hard on him to cut and doesnt have the bjj or wrestling pedigree that Chris will have to worry about on the ground. He is a great striker but Chris has a gym full of great strikers to get him ready. He also has a wrestling coach that competed in the olympics, former #1 mma heavyweight to roll with, a team of fighters that would gladly take time off work and put their bodies on the line to spar with, one of a few certified kettlebell instructors that helped him pack on more muscle mass and engineered a routine around fighting, a team doctor that has kept him injury free, food sponsors, clothing sponsors (skidlords) and most of all his woman and his family are standing right behind supporting him. This man has never had this in his many fights so look for Bukwas to put on a great performance and get that title shot he so rightfully deserves.
