Bully Proof ![]() I speak with experience when it comes to the subject of bullying. I wasn't always the man I am today. I battled with being "Husky" most of my life. Not only that but my teeth were not perfect and I had a messy mop for hair. ( I wish I had that mop today lol) I changed schools quite often so I had to try to make new friends. When you add the imperfections from all the above you have a formula as being the easy target. A bullied child is often powerless to stop the bullying without outside help. Bullying is an everyday occurance and can happen right under our own noses. Most parent , teachers or guardian dont even know that this is happening because the child is too scared to let anyone know thinking that it will only get worse if they do. Bullying is the act of power through aggression. Victims suffer from low self esteam, are at risk for adjustment difficulties and even worse , depression. ![]() This is where we step in. Starting October 9th we will be taking two separate groups of girls and boys (6 per class, 3 per trainer) ages 10-14 and help them overcome the torment of their abusers by building self confidence, work on fitness as well as self defense. This will give them and opportunity to channel their aggression to something positive and meet other kids with similar problems. I have been dealing with kids like this since I took over the club and now it's time to take it a step further. The cost is $50 a month and is co sponsored by Bryce Hansen and Anna Jorgensen to keep the cost down. We will be running this course at Marc St Jules new location in Comox called the Living Room. Its a nice comfortable environment and less intimidating then a boxing club. St. Jules is a longtime promoter of anti-bullying awareness campaigns and has put on events for UFC Vancouver in which he used the UFC as a sounding board. This in turn went global and initiated the Fight Foundation (Knockout Bullying Non-Profit Organization) out of Las Vegas founded by Keebo Robinson who took part in St. Jules' UFC Vancouver anti-bullying events. For more info on times and if their is spots available pm me at 250-898-7444 or Marc St Jules at [email protected]

Last weekend I had the privilege of attending the command judging course that was set up by Big John McCarthy at the River Rock Casino in Richmond.
By far one of the most educational mma coarses you can possibly take. As a coach and fighter you think you know what the judges are thinking in a fight but there are many areas where you might be wrong. I knew before taking this course that about 20 % of people actually pass, so thinking that I can just show up without studying and going over EVERY move and submission would have been stupid. I had scored 87% on my tests but in order to pass you need at least 90%. You might think that it is a little strict but do you really want (as a fighter) to have a guy judging your fight not know everything? It wouldn't be fair to you if you had an amazing move or strike and score but the judge didnt recognize it, and credit you for it. I understand this and accept that I didnt pass but I want to challenge the test again. This is why: We start the coarse Saturday morning at 8 am and run till 6pm. As soon as we finish the course, myself and 8 others are hurried over to officiate at Battlefield Fight League. The fights run until 12pm. We have to be back at the coarse at 7am. NO time to study and we all have about 5 hours sleep. Many of us only had time for a coffee. The sound on the video is not working and darkness on the screen makes it hard to see from my angle. My head was like scrambled eggs by the time we took the test at 6pm. Not making up excuses but I think that that played a big part on the extra 3% that it took to pass. If anything I came out of this course confident that I learned quite a bit about MY sport and the knowledge I learned will help everyone in my club and the people I will be judging in the future. Jonny Mac Its been close to four years now and finally things are really starting to come together for the Boxing Club. We are competing competively on every card up and down the island and earning respect wherever we go because of sportsmanship and skill. There is a bright future for the CVBC. Its our 25th anniversary this September and we are hoping to be going strong in another 25. |
