Boxing Gloves

One of the most asked questions people ask me is "what type of glove should I buy?"
I understand why this is asked often. So many shapes, sizes, weights, colours , prices and design. It can be very confusing and you might just settle for something that is flashy and pretty.
Choosing the right glove is very important. Not only can it decrease the chance of getting hurt but you want something that is comfortable and will not fall apart.
The truth is that the longer you spend in the sport of boxing the more money you will be willing to sink into boxing gear. You will have a collection of gloves in your bag for training.

Dont run out and buy $200 dollar gloves but you dont buy the $25 dollar pair at Walmart either.
When buying a  pair of gloves you will have to look for not only a good price but also something with durability, knuckle protection, wrist support, comfort, fit and size.
Most gyms will have you working the bag or focus mitts to start to get your body into fight shape. You will want a 12oz bag glove or heavier 16oz glove if you want to develope stronger shoulders and get a better workout. Something tough that can take the constant contact from the bag. If you plan on sparring, you shouldn't be using your beat up bag gloves and should get a good pair of (partner friendly) sparring gloves. At our club we all have to work in the morning so we spar with 16oz.

Here are some of my favorite gloves I like in no specific order. Twins, Rival, Top King, Cleto Reeves and Boon for beginner training. They are all around the $100 to 175 price range. They will last and are very supportive around the wrist and knuckles.
I always insist on trying on gloves before buying them. Here in the Comox Valley we have Fitness etc. They carry a large selection of gloves and their staff has a lot of knowledge of the brands they carry.
Remember this....the glove does not make the fighter,  but having the right gloves can help.

 Hi everyone.
It's been almost a year since I posted anything here on the website. Sorry ...I'm not too savy when it comes to computer stuff but I promise to try to learn.
Our schedule is up to date and will be running classes throughout the summer.
Its a great time to get started if you are a beginner classes are smaller in the summer months and you get a more time with the coaches.
I am going to keep it short today but please stay tuned because plan on writing more often.

Boxing vs Parkinson's

Our Boxing vs Parkinson's program started last November under the guidance of myself, the staff and members of the Comox Valley Boxing Club. When I became aware of the interest some people in the community with Parkinson's had in trying boxing I invited the group to the club along with fitness instructor Jill Nelson (who had contacted me about the group) They fell in love with it and the classes began and continue every friday from 2:30 until 3:30pm
This high intensity class combines exercises largely adapted from boxing routines which focus on optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, footwork and overall strength to defend against and overcome opponents. In this case the opponent is Parkinson's
The class includes footwork drills, slip lines, double end bags, heavy bags, speed/timing bags and partner drills. Boxing gloves are not essential but desired for comfort and safety. As one woman said in class once " As soon as I put on those gloves and hit the bag, i felt a sense of power." She also said that when her Parkinson's symptoms began, she felt like a stranger had taken over her body. Now she feels like she has some control.
Studies show that by working on these skills, participants have the potential to slow down the progression of their disease and improve their quality of life.
If you or someone you know with Parkinson's are interested in trying a class, please just show up before 2:30. Bring a pair of clean indoor shoes , drinking water and there is a nominal $5 fee. FMI contact myself at 250-898-7444 or Parkinson's Support group member Anne at 250-897-1657

Its been a while since my last blog. I have been a busy boy in the last couple months. We have added more classes and also trying to accomidate more one on one sessions for people with funny schedules and for those that like to work out in more private setting.
We have started a couple new classes I would like to mention. Our womens health and fitness class, beginner fitness , heavyweights fitness and Kettlebell fit class.
Womens health and fitness runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9am. Its a high intensity aerobic workout designed to improve strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Exercises are specific to target areas such as legs, core and shoulders to create more power and stamina. Overall results are: weight loss, body tone, improve confidence and self esteem. This class is taught by Joyce

Heavyweights is a class for those that have packed away a few too many pounds and might have given up on themselves. I currently have a client that has lost 178lbs in this class. We start slow and work on the basics. Trying to get people moving and motivate to change their lives.
Beginner Fitness is a class that is meant to get people moving for their first time or for those that might not have worked out in a long time. Out of ten this course is a 3 to 5 in intensity and difficulty.  Course taught by Noel Wallace

Kettlefit is one of my favorite classes. Its the only training you’ll ever need, but you can easily combine it with the rest of your training at the club  to tailor a program guaranteed to help you achieve weight loss, improved strength, power, endurance, speed or mobility. High energy functional strength training to create the ultimate YOU. Class taught by me Jonny Mac
You can find our schedule on the website. Hope to see you soon.
